Paulo Emílio Valadão de Miranda has graduated specializing in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and obtained his Doctorate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He worked as Post-Doctorate at the Ecole Centrale de Paris and at the Université de Paris-Sud, in France. Presently, he is Professor at Coppe - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Head of its Hydrogen Laboratory, which has originated two active spin-off companies and where three four-year long term projects are being developed and financed by Brazilian Governmental Agencies and enterprises, such as Oxiteno S.A. and Furnas Centrais Elétricas S.A. His main research interests include the development of hybrid-electric hydrogen fuel cell buses, having demonstrated two prototypes; solid oxide fuel cells for the electrochemical conversion of methane into selected hydrocarbons and for the distributed generation of electricity using ethanol as fuel. He is member of the International Advisory Board of the European Fuel Cell Forum and Brazilian representative at the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy. Paulo develops research works on the following areas: physical properties of hydrogen in materials; materials for hydrogen storage; fuel cells; hydrogen embrittlement; plasma assisted hydrogen production; hydrogen detection; metallic amorphous materials; hard magnetic nano-structured materials; and surface engineering.
