Dr. Frano Barbir is Professor-in-Residence at Connecticut Global
Fuel Cell Center, University of Connecticut. He has spent more than
a half of his 25-year engineering career directly involved in development
of PEM fuel cells and fuel cell systems. Before joining the University
of Connecticut he was the Director of Fuel Cell Technology and Chief
Scientist with Proton Energy Systems in Wallingford, CT, and before
that he was a Vice President for Technology and Chief Scientist
with Energy Partners, West Palm Beach, FL. He led the teams that
designed and built fuel cells and fuel cell systems and put them
in practical applications. At University of Connecticut's Mechanical
Engineering Department he introduced a new course on Fuel Cell Engineering.
He is the author or co-author of more than 140 publications on fuel
cells and hydrogen energy, published in technical and scientific
journals, books, encyclopedias and conference proceedings. He is
the associate editor of the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy
and the Subject Editor for the Journal's special issues on fuel
cells. He holds a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from University
